Birth Anniversary of Har Gobind Khurana

The Indian-American biochemist, Har Gobind Khurana was born on 9th January, 1922.He shared the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1968 with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for research that helped to show how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids, which carry the genetic code of the cell, control the cell’s synthesis of proteins.
Har Gobind Khorana along with Nirenberg was awarded the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University in the same year. He was also awarded the Highest Presidential Award of India, Padma Vibhushan, in 1972.
On a commemorative issue celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Nobel Prize, St. Vincent and Grenadines has commemorated the Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, Har Gobind Khurana on its stamps.
The Millennium miniature sheet from Bhutan celebrating “Breakthroughs in modern medicine – 100 years” (panel B) also has Har Gobind Khurana on featured on it.
Common Wealth of Dominica has a $1 stamp issued to honour the Nobel Laureate.
Palau has also honoured Har Gobind Khurana and Robert Holley on its stamp.
